Watch the skies--more migration

Hey guys, the migration is on again tonight, and you can see it starting in the east and working its way west. It starts about 1.5 hrs after sunset. There is a giant flock of birds heading south from Chicago right now. Check the base reflectivity loop for Springfield Ill--you can see the flocks flying south.

Here is a paper from Sidney Gauthreaux at Cornell that gives a popular account of using NEXRAD to track birds. It tells you all about what the radar is showing. There are a lot of publications about hawk migration, etc., that he has PDF for that can be found here. Dr. Zeyl appears to be joining the Geek Squad.
